About this Unit
This unit provides training in the practical application of research in various fields of contemporary arts. The unit is project-based: in conjunction with Contemporary Arts staff, students delineate a small-scale research topic in their major field. Apart from students majoring in theoretical areas, this project should be of a practical nature. Class timeslots are devoted to group and individual consideration of practical and theoretical issues surrounding these small projects and the ongoing development of students' major honours projects, including lectures on specific research-oriented topics, such as resources and ethics, and round-table discussion and tutorial sessions. In order to complete their projects, students either create an artistic presentation (score, script, performance, exhibited work, recorded media) with comprehensive written documentation (including theoretical underpinnings), or submit a written research paper in the case of theoretical majors. In the course of the semester, students must make ongoing presentations of their work, leading to their participation in an Honours Colloquium, where they present, in a formal fashion, a paper outlining their work and progress.
