About this Unit
This unit focuses on the interrelationships between image and text in children’s literature. The unit examines both picture books and other image-based children’s texts, including electronic texts and graphic novels. The unit will examine children’s texts as cultural artefacts, theories of visual literacy and how image and text combine to create meaning. Students will have the option of creating their own picture book for their final project or undertaking a critical analysis of a number of contemporary picture books.
