About this Unit
The first part of this unit covers theoretical and empirical issues in industrial organisation. Topics include concepts of economic efficiency and an introduction to welfare economics, other aspects of market performance, elements of market structure and the structure - conduct-performance model. The unit then goes on to consider market conduct, including alternative theories of the firm and strategic market behaviour. The role and regulation of public sector enterprises is considered. The final section of the unit is concerned with competition policy in Australia, covering areas such as trade practices legislation, the privatisation debate and reform of public sector enterprises, along with an evaluation of industry policy in Australia.
