About this Unit
A comprehensive review of theories relating to industrial relations systems and labour market analysis forms the theoretical basis of the unit. Theories discussed include the role of trade unions, employers, the state and regulation, models of the labour market, approaches to employment and unemployment, disadvantaged groups, hours of work, skill formation, wages policy, and arbitration. In the second part of the unit, once the underlying theories have been explained and understood, the emphasis turns to the practice of industrial relations in the national context. Advocacy skills are taught and put into use through a series of simulated exercises in advocacy and conciliation in the context of a system of formal compulsory conciliation and arbitration, while bearing in mind the changes that are occurring.
