Unit Enrolment Restrictions
Students must be enrolled at Western Sydney University, The College unless specific approval is given by Western Sydney University. Students enrolled in Extended Diplomas must pass 40 credit points from the preparatory units listed in the course structure prior to enrolling in this University level unit. Pre-requisites: Students enrolled in 7067 Diploma in Information and Communications Technology Extended, 7083 Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology Extended (WSTC FYP), 7106 Diploma in Information and Communications Technology (Health Information Management) Extended or 7107 Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology (Health Information Management) Extended (WSTC FYP) must pass 700199 Academic Communication 2 (WSTC Prep) or 700208 English for Tertiary Study 2 (WSTC Prep) or 700210 Introduction to Academic Communication 2 (WSTC Prep) and must pass 700201 Computer Studies (WSTC Prep) before enrolling in this unit.


About this Unit
The main purpose of this unit is to provide students with an opportunity to gain a basic knowledge of database design and development including data modeling methods, techniques for database design using a set of business rules that are derived from a case study and finally implementation of the database using a commercial relational database management system. The unit also examines a number of important database concepts such as database administration, concurrency, backup and recovery and security. At the same time student learning and intercommunication skills are enhanced by running tutorial presentations and group assignments.
