About this Unit
This unit introduces the fundamentals of soil, air and water as microbial habitats and composition of their microbial communities and microbial involvement in biochemical cycling of nutrients. It also deals with the application of microbial ecology to biodeterioration, biodegradation, and microbial pest control. This unit examines microbial interactions with other microbes as well as with plants and animals. Many of today's environmental problems, and potential solutions, are intimately interwoven with the microbial component of the global ecosystem and this unit is an important ingredient in marketing for employment due to society's increased focus on the environment.
