This course is designed to provide students with appropriate training and theoretical background to equip them to work as professional interpreters or translators. The course consists of a key field of study in Interpreting and Translation and a major in language, linguistics and cultural studies. Students also complete a period of professional practical experience. An honours program is available as an additional year (or part time equivalent) to meritorious students.

Note: Students in 1519 Bachelor of Arts (Interpreting and Translation) who have failed unit 101846 Interpreting Accreditation Studies UG or 101847 Translation Accreditation Studies UG may qualify for an alternative exit degree in 1604 Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Languages by completing any additional 10 credit point unit. Note that students may not exit with two awards. This is an alternative exit provision.

Accreditation
This course is approved by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) at the Professional level (formerly Level 3). Eligibility for accreditation is triggered by the final examinations in the unit 101846 Interpreting Accreditation Studies UG or 101847 Translation Accreditation Studies UG, in which students are required to pass* in at least one direction (i.e. Translation into English or Translation from English). These examinations adhere to NAATI requirements. *Note: NAATI requires a minimum pass mark of 70 percent.

Special Requirements Prerequisites
Any two units of English and a high level of proficiency (native or near-native level) in one of the languages offered in the course. The languages offered, subject to demand, are: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.

Qualification for this award requires the successful completion of 240 credit points including the units listed in the recommended sequence below.
